Mike Grant

(Moods & Grooves) ∞ DJ

At the end of the 1990s, Mike Grant re-emerged as one of the leading figures in Detroit’s growing house scene after spending the majority of the decade and late ‘80s pursuing other ambitions. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin.

Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills.

During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open.

During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast.
Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance.

In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Recent accomplishments include remixing the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” being selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selection and participation in DEMF/Movement, and inclusion to the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.

Luke Hess

(DeepLabs, FXHE, Echocord) ∞ Live & DJ

Born in 1980 and raised in the Detroit area, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement. His background in mathematics and engineering has given him a scientific approach to the dance floor, using frequencies, tones, and soundscapes to transform surroundings and mood. His faith based music production has landed him a seat with FXHE in Detroit, with numerous EP’s and remixes on other labels like Planet-e, Rekids, Echocord, Kontra-Musik, Dolly, Finale Sessions, Ornaments, and Prime Numbers among others. His debut album was released in early May 2009 by Denmark based label Echocord. In 2010 he began his own interpretation of Detroit techno with his new Detroit project and record label – DeepLabs. His sophomore album “Keep On” was released on FXHE records in 2012 and received a Recommended 4.5/5 rating on Resident Advisor. With 15 years of DJ experience, he is regarded as a perfectionist behind the decks layering his tracks in a very detailed and hypnotic manner. Luke has played at many notable venues and festivals in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America including 10 separate appearances at the illustrious Berghain/Panoramabar in Berlin. Luke’s continued hard work in and out of the studio combined with his unyielding interest in technology and sound will no doubt stimulate the boundaries of electronic music.

Ohm Hourani

(Anoma) ∞ Live & DJ

Impassioned to inject intellectual material into the electronic music scene, OHM HOURANI continues to challenge his understanding of sound. Alongside his innovative studio work, the Montreal-based artist embraces the intricate relationship between technology and electronic music.
His record label ANOMA is dedicated to the distribution of minimalistic, distinctive sounds kissed with a jazzy flair. Funded by the Canada Council of Arts and released in 2019, debut full-length album Jazz of the Machine travels long a didactic path carved by modular synthesizers and drum machines, navigated in the company of carefully hand-picked musicians and vocalists.

Hourani’s playful enthusiasm manifests itself in his live sets and DJ sets that have piqued the curiosity of progressive-minded music enthusiasts and critics alike. His compositions showcase an infusion of organic sounds and live recordings with intricate sound engineering.
Collective works have been showcased live locally at his beloved MUTEK Montreal Festival, while also travelled abroad as feature performances at the Japanese edition of Montreux Jazz Festival. His DJ sets have resonated warmly with club audiences at esteemed institutions such as Berlin’s Club Der Visionaere, on board floating Parisian club Concrete, or at one of New York’s renowned afterparties.

It’s an amorous and insightfully curious approach to creating sound. You might even call it anomalistic.

Beretta has played an important role in helping shape and develop the careers of many internationally respected producers on its roster. Lusine

(Ghostly International) ∞ Live

Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux. Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began steadily releasing his music on Ghostly International (home to 2004’s landmark Serial Hodgepodge as well as its successful followup remix album Podgelism), Hymen, and U-Cover. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to various compilations and remix releases on Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Shitkatapult. His Language Barrier full-length on Hymen Records was something of a departure, as McIlwain focused less on jagged rhythmic detail and more on the layers of ambience that lay beneath the percussion of his previous releases.

McIlwain has performed throughout the US and abroad, including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient multimedia performance at Seattle’s Triple Door in which he collaborated with video artist Scott Sunn. McIlwain has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 filmSnow Angels (with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell), and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film Linewatch (with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omari Hardwick).

Jeff Samuel

(Pokerflat) ∞ DJ

For more than 10 years, Jeff Samuel has been releasing quality dance music which blurs the lines between house and techno. It makes sense, his hometown of Cleveland is positioned 3 hours from Detroit and 6 hours from Chicago. Pulling influences from both cities as well as his own wider musical tastes, Jeff managed to create a sound all his own. Prominent artists such as Michael Mayer and Ricardo Villalobos caught onto his sound early on, remixing his 1st and 4th EP’s. His funky and playful use of sound caught the attention of techno pioneer Daniel Bell, who released his “New Joob” EP on the legendary 7th City Records in 2001. Another early admirer was Steve Bug, who not only remixed Jeff’s DC10 Ibiza anthem “Knob” for Trapez, but also signed him for a string of releases on his own Poker Flat label.

By 2005, Jeff was a regular on the European DJ circuit. He released his first mix CD for Poker Flat and began to attract more attention for his remixes. Artists as diverse as Hot Chip, Guido Schneider and Der Dritte Raum all received the Jeff Samuel remix treatment. From the dancefloor-centric music released on Spectral Sound and Morris Audio to more trippy releases on Contexterrior and Karloff, a common strain of humanity and personality is always inside Jeff’s music. This culminated in “Step”, his 2006 debut LP for Trapez which received 4.5 stars in Resident Advisor and was called “timeless” by Groove Magazine.

Now living in Berlin, Jeff’s DJ profile continues to spread beyond the confines of Europe. he has appeared at top festivals such as MUTEK, DEMF/Movement, Decibel, Fusion and Overground. While he enjoys performing DJ sets at the world’s finest clubs such as Panorama Bar and Fabric London, he also thrives in further territories such as Japan, China, Israel, South America and beyond. He is most known for his extended DJ sets, which give him more space to weave together different elements for sweaty dancefloors everywhere.

Today, Jeff is known as one of the most respected artists in underground dance music. This is reflected in the recent re-releases of his early work. The afterhours classic “Lost” was re-released in 2007, 6 years after its original release. In 2009, an onslaught of re-releases from Logistic and Trapez appeared alongside his new material. “Timeless” indeed.

Joachim Spieth

(Affin) ∞ DJ

Joachim Spieth is a German DJ, music producer and label owner who emerged musically in the late nineties and has since developed a multi-faceted spectrum of sound between the poles of ambient and spherical techno. Characteristic for his work is the attention to detail and a sensitive sensorium for the creation of atmospheres, which one can hardly escape, no matter if this takes place in his studio work or in his performances.
After several years of intensive collaboration with Wolfgang Voigt’s Kompakt imprint, he founded his own label, Affin, in 2007, which has been constantly developing ever since and has made a name for itself internationally. Besides quite a few EP’s and collaborations, he has released a number of albums in the past years such as Irradiance, Tides, Ousia, Terrain as well as the recently released Reshape projekt, which features variations of his music tracks by Alva Noto, ASC, bvdub and others. John Tejada

(Palette, Kompakt) ∞ Live & DJ

With both his parents being professional classical musicians, it might not be a surprise that John Tejada has become known as one of the most prolific and consistent producers in today’s eletronic music landscape. Trained on drums and the piano from an early age, the LA-based synth mastermind has since amassed his own impressive skill set, embracing the music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical sonics, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

Before hooking up with Kompakt, the much-acclaimed studio wizard had already made his own dent in the musical universe, thanks to a flurry of top-tier releases on labels such as Steve Bug’s Pokerflat Recordings, the legendary Plug Research imprint, 7th City, R&S and many more – but nothing prepared the world for those exquisite bangers „Sweat On The Walls“ and „Mono On Mono“, both released in 2004, with the latter being one of the most fervently beloved classics on John’s own label Palette Recordings. It’s here that John has continuously honed his skills, together with friends and long-time collaborators like Arian Leviste, Justin Maxwell or classical jazz guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto (as band project I’m Not A Gun).

Besides his work in the trenches of modules, patches and other things spelled synth, John has developed some serious DJ acumen over the years – travelling around the globe to light up renowned clubs and festivals such as Movement (the event formerly known as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival), Sonar Festival (both the Spain and Tokyo instalments), Dance Valley (Netherlands), Sync Festival (Greece), Mutek Mexico, Fabric (London), Yellow (Tokyo), Rex Club (Paris), The Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and many, many more. It’s somewhat admirable, then, that the man still finds time for his studio explorations – but the quality of the releases he has unleashed upon Kompakt alone (including brilliant full-length offerings and a couple of much-liked 12“es) bears witness to the musical genius that is John Tejada.
